Lifetime Achievement Award Pays Tribute to Ross Atkinson
ALCTS and EBSCO Honor Distinguished Library Leader and Today's Outstanding Librarians

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama, U.S.A., Sept. 26, 2006 - The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) and EBSCO Information Services are pleased to announce the establishment of the Ross Atkinson Lifetime Achievement Award.

This new award honors the legacy of Ross Atkinson, distinguished library leader, author and scholar whose extraordinary service to ALCTS and the library community at-large serves as a model for those in the field. The award winner receives a citation honoring his or her contributions and a stipend of $3,000 donated by EBSCO.

The award will recognize the contribution of a library leader who has demonstrated exceptional service to ALCTS and its areas of interest (acquisitions, cataloging and classification, collection management and development, preservation and reformatting and serials). Criteria for selection of the winner will be determined by the individual's accomplishments as they relate to leadership, including but not limited to:

  • recognized leadership in professional associations at the local, state, regional or national level, with emphasis on ALCTS
  • acknowledged leader in and by the library community-at-large
  • significant contribution to professional literature
  • exemplary research in ALCTS areas
  • recognition of achievements, e.g., awards, citations, etc.
"We are pleased to partner with ALCTS to establish this award in honor of Ross Atkinson," said Joe K. Weed, vice president and general manager, Corporate Communications, EBSCO. "It is vital that the industry recognizes today's hardworking librarians whose dedication and service will have a profound effect on generations to come. We are delighted to honor and reward these outstanding individuals through the Ross Atkinson Lifetime Achievement Award."

Written nominations must be received by Bonnie MacEwan, chair of the award jury, no later than Dec. 1, 2006. Nominations must include: name, address, phone number and email address of nominee and nominating party; a formal statement of nomination, with a rationale for the nomination; a resume, vita or extensive narrative career outline upon which the award jury can base its determinations; and letters of endorsement. Letters of endorsement should provide additional evidence of the worthiness of the nominee. It is recommended that no less than three and no more than six letters of endorsement be included.
